Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a monthly stipend for imams of more than 65,000 mosques across the province — marking the first initiative of its kind in Punjab’s history.
Chairing a meeting on law and order, the CM said imams deserve financial stability and should not rely on community donations. She added that the government will now take full responsibility for their welfare to ensure dignity and respect for religious leaders.
Officials briefed the chief minister that mosque construction and renovation projects have been included in the Annual Development Programme (ADP). She instructed authorities to complete these projects quickly and maintain the sanctity of all mosques.
Maryam Nawaz also ordered road repairs and special arrangements ahead of the Raiwind Tablighi Congregation, including enhanced security and transport facilities.
A Cyber Crime Cell will also be established to prevent online misuse and enforce the Loudspeaker Act.
Religious scholars and community leaders have praised the stipend scheme, calling it a historic and positive step toward empowering imams and preserving mosque sanctity across Punjab.
