The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced a new national record for income tax return filings, with 5.9 million returns submitted as of 7:00 p.m. on October 31, 2025.
This marks a 17.6% increase compared to last year’s 5 million returns, highlighting growing voluntary compliance and public engagement in the tax system.
⏰ No Blanket Extension — Only Individual Relief Allowed
Despite the record surge, the FBR has ruled out any general extension of the filing deadline, in line with Prime Minister’s directives.
However, taxpayers facing genuine hardships can apply for individual extensions through the IRIS online system or by contacting their respective field offices.
“Taxpayers who could not file due to genuine issues may seek extensions, but there will be no nationwide relaxation,” an FBR official confirmed.
💰 Strong Growth in Tax Payments
Out of the total 5.9 million returns filed, 3.6 million taxpayers submitted returns with tax payments, representing an 18.6% rise compared to last year.
Tax payments have also surged:
-
From Rs. 60 billion (2024) → to Rs. 69 billion (2025)
-
An increase of Rs. 9 billion — or 15% year-over-year growth
📢 FBR’s Digital Outreach Drives Success
The FBR credited the surge to a nationwide digital awareness campaign, supported by:
-
The Prime Minister’s Office
-
The Ministry of Information
-
The FBR’s digital media team
The outreach included:
-
Automated robocalls and WhatsApp reminders
-
Targeted email nudges to 800,000 taxpayers
-
Behavioral message testing to encourage timely filing
These coordinated efforts significantly increased engagement and reduced last-minute filing issues.
🇵🇰 A Step Toward a Broader Tax Base
Officials said the growing number of return filers is a positive signal for Pakistan’s economy, showing rising civic responsibility and improved digital access for taxpayers.
The FBR reaffirmed its commitment to supporting honest taxpayers through simplified procedures and tech-driven tools, aiming to further expand the tax base in 2026.
